It was a rainy morning in San Gimignano, Italy. I was taking a leisurely walk admiring the architecture and imagining the past when I saw a red car that was decidedly modern. It provided quite a contrast to the rest of the scene.

When I was in Italy I was determined to sample as much gelato as possible. This picture presents a display of many flavors embellished with fruit and flowers and kept in silver-colored containers. Now I need to plan another trip to Italy and include lots of stops for gelato.
It’s the perfect time to look back on this year’s travel destinations. For me it started with trips to Dallas and Philadelphia in the winter followed by Anaheim in the summer, and then St. Petersburg, Chicago and North Carolina in the fall. I was also in Italy during May. Here is a sample of my 2012 in pictures.

It’s time for some creamy, delicious gelato. I wonder which flavors I should choose – there are so many possibilities. And I also have to consider what are good combinations.

One of the things I look forward to in Italy is the gelato. And on this trip I was determined to sample gelato everywhere I went. It wasn’t easy, but I’d challenged myself and I did my best to go to as many gelato shops as I could. So while I was in Italy I had at least one a day. But it was in the name of research, and I decided to eat as much as possible to provide accurate information.
It happened to rain on the day I visited San Gimignano in Tuscany. Since this is always a possibility on a trip, I came to Italy prepared for any kind of weather. So I wore a poncho and carried an umbrella. Since it wasn’t windy, the umbrella didn’t blow inside out! When I wanted to take a picture I stood under an awning or near a building entrance. I thought the town looked pretty in the rain and I accepted it as something that happens when you travel. Continue reading
