Autumn Sights

A couple of years ago I was in Colonial Williamsburg to see the autumn foliage. I didn’t expect to see so much greenery in November, but it was a delightful day and many people were out walking wearing t-shirts, shorts and sandals. I didn’t think it was that warm but I ended up carrying my jacket after walking for a couple of hours. Here are some of the sights.

With everything still so green I wondered if I’d see any fall foliage. I did find this tree on one of the streets and the colors were lovely.

A Walk in Rockport

Last fall I was on a family visit to Massachusetts (my hometown is Lexington), and one afternoon I went to Rockport for a walk. It was a bright sunny day and perfect for seeing both the water and many of the interesting shops there. Since it was autumn the flowers looked like this:

I found some unique shops too – the candy store was one of my favorites!

But looking at the water provided some of the most charming views.

I’m really looking forward to visiting there again as soon as possible!

November Scenes

I’ve been in different parts of Virginia over the past few weeks and the change in the trees has been remarkable.  When I was in Williamsburg at the beginning of the month there was a lot of color in the leaves and shrubs.  A nursery at Colonial Williamsburg had rows of greenery and potted plants for sale.  Last week I was in the mountains and saw the Natural Bridge.  It was quite impressive even though the leaves were gone.  Still, the trees can be dramatic even without leaves.

Autumn Leaves

Last Sunday afternoon I went to the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia to see the fall colors.  I picked a good day for a visit because this is what I saw.

Autumn colors are everywhere.

Sometimes it isn’t necessary to say too much about your subject.  The scenery is simply perfect.

Flowers for all Seasons

I’ve been thinking about this year and all the opportunities that I’ve had to see flowers while traveling.  It seems that each season features colorful and unique flowers.  Here are some of my favorites from the spring, summer, fall and winter.  It’s a nice way to remember the year!  I’m looking forward to the year ahead with new opportunities to travel as well as time to enjoy being near home.

I’ve noticed that spring and summer flowers are both bright and dainty:

Here are some interesting autumn and winter flowers:

I wish you a very Happy New Year!

Travel theme: Colourful

After all the cold weather from last week most of the leaves have fallen.  It has been a lot of work raking but after such a lovely autumn it was worth it.  I’ve even thought about jumping into the piles of leaves!  Just before the weather changed I took some final pictures to remind me of how pretty autumn colors are.  Here are some of my souvenir pictures from the last couple of weeks.

There are still pumpkins for sale at a roadside stand.  They are so cheerful.

In Search of Autumn Leaves

The leaves are just starting to change color in Virginia and this is happening later than I’ve been used to.  Typically by this time the leaves have mostly fallen so I’m really enjoying the change.  Over the past few weeks I’ve noticed that just one tree will have a few leaves that are yellow, orange or red.  Everything else is still green.

However it now looks like autumn colors have finally arrived!  It is interesting to see the colors changing and I drove to an orchard in the mountains to pick apples and enjoy some fresh cider, as well as admire the season’s colors.

Autumn has arrived.

Dreamy

Yesterday I drove to Charlottesville and I wanted to see if the leaves were starting to change colors.  I had checked the weather forecast and saw that it predicted rain for the afternoon.  Yet as I was driving it started to rain in the morning and it was generally gray and misty all day.  But after I realized there wouldn’t be any sunshine I decided it could still be an interesting day.  The scenery was actually more dramatic accompanied by the rain.  I thought that it looked dreamy and it was fun to imagine where this path might lead.  I’m sure it was a path to adventure!

I even found a tree that had pretty autumn leaves.

An Autumn Walk

There are some interesting paths for walking on the grounds of the Carl Sandburg Home in North Carolina.  Last week while I was there it was a sunny and somewhat cool day.  It simply meant that having a light jacket made it more comfortable for being outdoors.  The path I chose went along a lake and the leaves were just starting to change color.  It was even possible to see everything twice because of the reflections on the water.
